AWE

Alkaline Water Electrolyser (AWE) has two electrocatalytically active electrodes immersed in a liquid alkaline electrolyte (NaOH/KOH) solution, separated by a diaphragm. Diaphragm is used to separate the product gases and transport the hydroxide ions (OH−) from one electrode to the other.

Alkaline Water Electrolyser

How does it work

Alkaline water Electrolyzer (AWE) has two electrocatalytically active electrodes immersed in a liquid alkaline electrolyte (NaOH/KOH) solution, separated by a diaphragm. The concentration of NaOH or KOH solution is in the range of 20-40% in water. There are two major design configurations in AWE
(a) Tank cell (Unipolar configuration)
(b) Filter press cell (Bipolar configuration) as shown below.

Advantages

  • Robust, High reliability and durability (30-40 years)
  • Well established and mature at large scale technology
  • Low specific energy consumption
  • High lifetime and gas purity
  • Low cost due to cheaper material such as Nickel, Stainless steel, etc.
